Today I’m going to let you in on a little secret about my relationship with Barrett. One of the best things we ever did for our marriage was free ourselves from the expectation of gifting to one another. For years we did it. Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, anniversary gifts, and holy how does anyone save any money at all when they’re just spending it on gifts for each other? So we decided, no. It was too much. We were spending too much and on what? Stuff? We didn’t need more stuff, we had plenty. What we needed was experiences. So for the last seven years we haven’t gifted a thing to one another and I’ve loved and appreciated every occasion to not-gift because every one of those not-gifts quietly got us a few dollars closer towards buying something big that was bursting at the seams with experiences we’d share together. Something like…oh, I don’t know…a SAILBOAT.
But this Christmas, I totally broke the rules. I put together a photo book recapping the highs and lows of our journey on LaMo for him (slash us) and I put it in a white box and tied some bright red and green ribbon around it and I didn’t even feel a little bit guilty about breaking the rules because it was all in the name of preserving the memories we’d made together this past year. Barrett was just a teensy bit perturbed when he saw the box sitting under the tree and realized I’d broken our golden gifting rule. So I lied and told him it was just dude underwear and not even the expensive kind.
When he opened it all of that faded. (Though I do think maybe he was just a little bit bummed about not getting a nice new fleet of dude underwear.) And what happened instead was that we both sat there on my mother’s couch flipping through pages of memories we’d made on our first ever boat. Looking through them all, made me realize just how far we’ve come, just how clueless we were at the start of all of this, and it made me want to share some of those moments with you, too.
So for year end, here’s a look back at some unseen moments from our 2017. Our Life on LaMo: The Good, The Bad, and the Bloopers.
I hope your 2017 was full of love, laughter, and adventures and if not, well then there’s always next year. Which starts tomorrow. Happy New Year, friends.
There were sunrises and sunsets for days and days and days.
Living on a 40-foot boat, just the two of us and the dog, meant we got to spend lots of QT with our sweet and spazzy Bourré.
We ate damn well. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. (Click the pics for recipes!)
Those days when the wind was just perfect.
It’s true. The people we met cruising will probably be our friends for life. (And also, cruising kids are officially the cutest!)
The mister was really good at doing backflips off LaMo’s bow. His wife was not. (See bloopers.)
Decorating the boat for the holidays was the most fun in all the world.
Sometimes, we really did do nothing but lounge around all day.
The year could also have been summed up as: We bought a boat. And then everything broke. The end. (Fun fact that I know now after two boat purchases and two years of boat ownership: That’s literally EVERY boat ever.)
Turns out we weren’t very good at fishing at first. The upshot is we got better!
Weather was sometimes hard. (See also: Getting struck by lightning.)
I hated this old stove. Capital H, HATE.
Some dogs — ahem, Bourré — are just a little bit accident prone…
And sometimes those same dogs wake up inexplicably scared of water one day and totally into it the next day. But either way, they manage to be awkward about it.
Confession. That featured image you saw up top took FOUR TRIES. And my nose was snotting out water like a hose for 24 hours afterwards. (The upside was my sinuses have never felt so clear!)
Ignore my amazing hair situation and zoom in on Bourré’s snout for a second.
Fun fact. You know those adorable swimming Bahamian pigs? They’re terrifying.
When you go to drink your Red Stripe and forget you already finished it and then filled the bottle with salt water just for kicks.
Anchor diving and fishing are just more fun when you’re naked.
That one time in the Berry Islands when I tried to show Barrett how good I was at diving and was all “take a picture of me while I do it!” and then did this — the world’s most epic bellyflop. Ouch.
My best friend + a bottle of rum + a Bahamian blow hole in slow mo = …
Well, that about sums up our 2017 and our first year as cruisers. Thanks for being a part of it! And here’s to making many more memories in 2018!
