Happy Saturday, all! A lot has been happening over here at C&M and I’m coming to you today with a few exciting updates.
The first is that I recently started writing for Portland Monthly magazine. I’ll be doing mostly food writing for their web magazine, but will also have other fun reports to share about all things Portland culture. I know most of you probably don’t live in Portland, but if you ever want to read my writing on this crazy-inventive, food-loving city’s culinary happenings, you can check out my work here.
And in case you want to see my very first article (eek!), an interview with the amazing (and super chill) Chef Jake Martin, click here.
In other news, my husband and I just bought our very first house! Why is this relevant to the blog, you might ask? Because it means a bigger kitchen with more fun things to cook, of course! I have done my very best not to whine about my current kitchen situation, but now that I’m about to move, I feel like I can whine…just a little, I promise. The rental we’ve been in, while functional, has not been the easiest space to cook and photograph in. It’s cramped, has almost no counter space, and has very limited light, meaning I can only photograph at very specific times of day. Not to mention, the vast majority of my cooking supplies are still in storage in California so I’ve been limited to cooking dishes that work with the few items that I took with me into this temporary rental. It’s been a challenge to say the least and I’m totally itching to be in our new space with all of my cooking supplies in tow. Okay, I’m done complaining now. See, not too bad 😉
This home purchase also means that I’ll finally have a yard large enough to start my very own garden. I have somewhat of a black thumb (no joke — I actually managed to kill a rosemary plant last year…WTF, who does that?), so this is a big endeavor for me. And because I’ve typed it out on this page for all of my lovely readers to see, it also means that I’m being held accountable to actually doing this garden thing soon. Hold me to it, okay?! Also, if anyone has suggestions on what to plant, how to garden, etc., please leave them in the comments section below! I’d love to know what produce you enjoy and also hear your tips/tricks while I strategize this little garden project of mine.
Lastly, because I can’t just post without providing you with some kind of lovely food-related imagery, I thought I’d leave you with this…A photo of Bourré indulging in his favorite food in the whole wide world…peanut butter! I know all dogs love PB, but I think Bourré is abnormally obsessed with it. Literally, every time I take the peanut butter out of the cupboard, he runs…scratch that…he SPRINTS from anywhere in the house to sit by my side, just hoping that it’s the last of the jar so that he can have the rest. Usually he drools a little while he sits, begging me with his big golden eyes to give him a taste. Most probably find that disgusting, but I find it endearing. (Sometimes, I’ll even sneak him a tablespoon or two just for being so damn cute.) But when it’s the end of the jar, he gets the whole thing to go crazy on. And crazy he went on it today. I don’t think he looked up from the jar until every last millimeter was gone and I pried it away from him. You would have thought I’d killed someone with the look he gave me when I took it away (empty, no less!)
Anyway, that’s all for now. I’ll probably be posting a bit less frequently in these next few weeks as I pack and unpack our belongings (again!), give our new kitchen a makeover with my non-home improvement skills, start a new job, write a dissertation, etc. You know, just the usual everyday stuff. Thanks, as always, for taking the time out of YOUR busy life to stop by and support my blog. It means more than you know.
And don’t forget to post your gardening suggestions below! I’ll plant some of my readers’ suggestions and then create custom recipes for them later this summer…assuming I haven’t killed everything with my black thumb, that is 😉
