Good morning, lovely readers! Remember last week when I said I’d be featuring one ingredient from Pike Place Market this week? Well I’ve decided to declare this week TRUFFLE WEEK! And I don’t mean the chocolate kind. Though I have heard of truffles as being referred to as the “chocolate of the earth” and quite frankly I’m inclined to agree with that comparison. Pretty much anything that derives from a truffle (salt, oil, bouillon, etc) is, in my opinion, heavenly. If you’ve never tasted truffles before, imagine the perfect harmony between flavors of earth, fruit, and nuts all packed intensely into one tiny bulb. And then go out and invest in a bottle of truffle oil because its bananas not to have that in your kitchen cupboard.
Now that I’ve rambled on about how highly I think of these little gems, it probably comes as no surprise that I fell in love with a truffle shop in Seattle during my trip last week. As I strolled by their storefront in Pike Place Market, I was lured in by all of the amazing aromas wafting out of it. Kind of like the little kids on Hocus Pocus who fall under the witches’ spell and migrate unknowingly towards their hidden cabin in the woods! Don’t lie, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Well that was me last week. I couldn’t resist walking in and I equally couldn’t resist walking out without spending about half my paycheck. (And before you go feeling all sorry for my husband for having a wife with such expensive tastes, let me remind you that he gets to eat all of this deliciousness. So really, you shouldn’t feel sorry for him at all ;))
Here are a few hints about what I’ll be whipping up this week with my truffled goodies. There will be five different recipes, one for each day starting tomorrow. Each dish will feature a type of truffle ingredient, either white or black. Three of the dishes incorporate the fresh black truffle photographed above. Just look at that little baby. Isn’t she beautiful? Two of the dishes will be vegetarian, both of which could easily be adapted to fit vegan lifestyles as well.
Intrigued? You should be. Because this is going to be the shiznit.
